About Rural Property Tax - Boundary Extensions and Municipal Incorporations

Boundary extensions occur when a municipality expands its boundaries to include rural land that was not previously within its jurisdiction.

A municipal incorporation occurs when a new municipality has been formed.

When boundary extensions or municipal incorporations occur, the municipality will tax what was formerly rural land. Any outstanding taxes, including current year taxes, are transferred from the Surveyor of Taxes office to the appropriate municipality for collection.
