Paying Your Rural Property Taxes At Financial Institutions

Introduction
You can pay your rural property tax through most Canadian financial institutions, and at credit unions located in British Columbia.
Applying for the Home Owner Grant

If you qualify for a Home Owner Grant and choose to pay your taxes through a financial institution you must submit your application form separately to the Surveyor of Taxes, your local Service BC - Government Agent office or complete the Electronic Home Owner Grant Application online.

For more information on the grant, please see our Home Owner Grant section.

Paying Taxes at a Financial Institution

Present the property tax notice to the teller, who will stamp and return the top portion as your receipt. The bottom part will be sent to the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue for credit to your account.

Remember - if it is not convenient for you to pay your property tax through a financial institution, you may continue to send your tax payment to the Surveyor of Taxes office in Victoria or to any Government Agent office.

Service Charges
Your financial institution may charge a fee for accepting your tax payment. You must pay this fee separately. It cannot be added to the tax amount paid, nor can it be deducted from the amount of tax due.
Please Note!

After a certain time of day, some tellers date their transactions for the next business day. If you pay your tax on July 2, you must ensure that the teller stamps the correct date on your payment. If the teller stamps the next business day's date, your payment will be considered late and a penalty will be applied. If you use an automated teller machine when making a payment on the due date of July 2, your payment may be date-stamped the next working day and result in a penalty.

Financial institutions cannot accept post-dated payments for rural property taxes.

Also, please remember that the teller is not a tax expert and cannot answer your tax questions. If you need help, contact the nearest Government Agents office listed in the blue pages of the local telephone directory, or the Surveyor of Taxes office in Victoria.

Account Overpayments and Refund Policy

For credits of $100 or more, refunds are automatically processed. The process takes approximately 30 to 60 days from the time the credit originates on the account. During the peak period of June 1 to August 31, it may take longer given the increased volume of credits at that time.

For credits of less than $100, the credit will remain on the account and apply to future tax liabilities unless a request for refund is made. Please see our Refunds page for more information
