Property Taxes

1. Rural Property Tax |
Rural Property Tax applies to land outside cities, towns, districts and village boundaries in British Columbia. Rural property makes up 90% of British Columbia's land area.

2. Home Owner Grant |
The Home Owner Grant is a program to reduce the school tax portion of the annual property taxes.

3. Property Transfer Tax |
Property Transfer Tax is different from property tax.
You pay Property Transfer Tax when you purchase or acquire an interest in a property. PTT also has the First Time Home Buyers' exemption – a program to assist first time home owners, as well as other exemptions.

Property Tax Deferment & Financial Hardship Property Tax Deferment are property tax assistance programs which allow qualifying owners to have the province pay their property taxes on their behalf.

5. School Tax |
A separate residential tax rate is set for each school district according to the province's residential school tax rate formula, which has been used since 1991. That formula automatically reduces tax rates as the average property value rises.

6. First Nations Self-Taxation |
If you have an interest in real property on First Nations land, the Indian Self Government Enabling Act exempts you from property taxation under every provincial enactment only if the First Nation has fulfilled the requirements of the Act.
